Celtic’s European Cup Triumph still torments

Our Big Cup win, to this day, haunts them big time…

Celtic’s European cup win was 56 years ago, but it still remains our biggest ever achievement as a football club. We were the first British and non Latin side to do so, and still the only Scottish side to win the prestigious trophy.

It was a historic and magical moment and one we quite rightly cherish. The Lisbon Lions are not only lauded in Celtic folklore, but are recognised and respected around the footballing world. Some though can’t bear the thought of even mentioning our achievements. It has them consumed with jealousy and rage that we achieved such a feat while their own clubs weren’t good enough to win the most decorated prize in European football.

Who are we talking about? Supporters of the various Govan clubs that have played out of Ibrox, that’s who. They can’t come to terms with the fact we won the big cup, that Celtic were the Champions of Europe, it pains them so much, especially when the club they used to support died trying to emulate our historic win.

That’s the harsh reality, the blatant truth, no matter how they try to discredit our achievement, and that they do, and on a regular basis. Comments like “It wasn’t a serious tournament back then” and “there was only a number of clubs competing” are just some of the wild excuses the deluded peepul come up with to hide their jealousy. It’s quite sad really.

So basically their theory is that every club who won the European Cup before it rebranded as the Champions League should not celebrate that success, it doesn’t count. In England Nottingham Forest (twice under Brian Clough) and Aston Villa both won the European Cup well before the current holder Manchester City effectively bought it.

Which achievement is greater? Forest’s back to back wins won by a brilliant manager who built a team from the second tier of English to Champions of Europe in two seasons and then retained the Big Cup, or the mega-riches spent by City to eventually – after many times of asking – get their hands on the biggest prize in cup football. And Celtic won it first before any of the English sides got their hands on it.

That’s how crazy their ideology is, but they can’t see it. Or more likely they do and just don’t want to recognise our achievement, an achievement theRangers will never equal. It still haunts them, and will continue to do so.

Nothing is certain in life other than taxes and death and let’s face it Rangers FC avoided the former before suffering the latter. And in football it’s almost impossible to imagine a Scottish club ever winning the Champions League to become Champions of Europe.

So they know that they will never match Celtic’s Big Cup win. Their old club died trying and the jealously is eating their support up to the present day.

About Author

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.
