Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam is never too many words away from a daft comment. Now plying his trade with Dundee, he recently said that his side had an “easy” trip to Celtic Park coming up, only to be left with egg on his face as the Hoops thumped the Dark Blues 6-0. A week later, he attempted to equate racist abuse against Kyogo Furuhashi with a chant about his sister’s pants… and today he completed a foolish hat-trick by performing remarkable mathematical gymnastics to try and make the figures involved in Odsonne Edouard’s transfer match his own outlandish prediction that Celtic would struggle to receive £5m for the player.
A little over two weeks ago Adam told PLZ Soccer : “What are they (Celtic) going to get for him (Edouard) now? His performances since he’s come back, they’re not going to warrant double figures. So what do they get? £5m and go from there?”
Needless to say that Edouard has just completed a £14m move to Crystal Palace, with the deal potentially rising to £18.5m when add-ons are included. As part of the deal, PSG have a 40% sell-on clause which applies to the profit that Celtic make after recouping their initial £9m outlay on the player. In other words, Celtic will receive £12m from the deal (excluding add-ons), whilst PSG will get £2m.
In response to the news, Adam was the subject of some jovial banter. He seemed to respond well to those picking him up on his woeful prediction, and jokingly tweeted that he did indicate that a five would be involved in the fee – Edouard’s departure to Selhurst Park potentially costing Palace £18.5m.
But it was somewhat bizarre to see him respond to one user by claiming that his comments were actually very close to being on the money.
Presumably Adam is either at the wind up, or is simply just much better at football than basic arithmetic. Either way, it’s always amusing when an outspoken detractor of the club is proven wrong.
