Charlie Mulgrew reveals hilarious Celtic car park prank

CHARLIE MULGREW has revealed how he left a Celtic security guard sweating after a car park prank at Lennoxtown. The versatile defender has some great stories during his six years at the club and during the Open Goal podcast, he told Si Ferry, Paul Slane and Kevin Kyle about a time he pretended to be a carjacker around the first team cars, wearing a balaclava.

“I’ve come in one Saturday morning and walked in the door still half-asleep.

“The boy at reception jumped up and went: ‘Morning!’

“I was like, ‘he’s on it today’. So I walked in and said, ‘boys, I’m going to get changed, put some different gear on and a balaclava. Tell him there’s somebody in the car park’.

“So I went out the car park trying motors. I think it was Joe Ledley went, ‘mate, there’s someone out in the car park trying motors’.

“He’s like that: ‘so there is’. He’s jumped up, he’s got all the CCTV and everything, he’s sprinted out the door.

“I’m running the motors, he’s like that ‘get out!’ I’m like, ‘no, I’m not leaving till I’ve got a motor’.

“He’s chasing me around motors, the boys are like that, ‘get him!’

“He chases me up the hill, he’s coming like that behind me thinking, ‘first day, I’ve got to put my authority down.’ You can tell he’s nervous.

“This went on for about 10 minutes, he’s chasing me around trees and all sorts. Eventually I took the hat off and he’s like, ‘oh no, you’ve done me there.’”

The hilarious story is just one that Mulgrew gives during the podcast. Mulgrew is fondly remembered for his time at the club – playing left back, left wing, centre back and central midfield. He was a regular lieutenant under Lennon during his first spell but the arrival of Brendan Rodgers resulted in the end of his time at Celtic. Some of the antics that went on during Lennon’s tenure are better left unsaid but a lot of what goes on would not be tolerated at the top clubs these days.

The Blackburn Rovers defender was part of the show that reviewed the Premiership matches over the weekend and is a must watch.
