Charlie never stopped scoring, watch those 40 Celtic goals in 90 seconds

When Sarah Ewens decided to try her luck in English football last summer, Fran Alonso was left with a problem. The Celtic FC manager had lost his top goalscorer, an experienced professional who had had a strong season as Celtic chased Glasgow City to the final day of the season in a dramatic title race which concluded a year ago this week.

Celtic ended up in second place in the SWPL1 and with it had secured Champions League qualification for the first time in the club’s history. However before he could go forward the Spanish coach had several set-backs to content with Ewens wanted to join Glasgow City manager Scott Booth, who was moving to Birmingham City, and Lisa Robertson – Celtic’s Player of the Year last season – also headed in the same direction on a season long loan.

Added to that Anna Filbey who had impressed on her loan spell from Tottenham for Alonso’s side, and was a free agent last summer, decided against a permanent move to Glasgow as she wanted to be closer to her family down south.

Charlie Wellings (#21) of Celtic Women FC celebrates her hat trick following her sides 6-0 win during the Scottish Womens Premier League 1 match between Celtic Women and Partick Thistle Women at Penny Cars Stadium, Airdrie, Scotland on 3 October 2021.

Those three were key players for Celtic and needed replacing, none more so that Ewens who was Alonso’s go to player for goals last season.

That though didn’t faze the bold Fran and he duly recruited Charlie Wellings from Bristol City, a player who had scored in an FA Cup Final at her previous club Birmingham City and had represented England at Under 21 level on numerous occasions.

Now 24, Wellings was approaching her peak and Celtic certainly saw the benefit this season with a remarkable return of 40 goals in her debut season, including a Player of the Match at the recent Women’s Scottish Cup Final against Glasgow City at Tyncastle. We did try our best to get you all to come along to what turned out to be one of the best games of the season for any of the Celtic sides and that was the afternoon when Charlie scored her 40th goal to bring her debut campaign to a close with two winners medals, winning both the League Cup and Scottish Cup.
