After Sunday’s loss at Parkhead at the hands of the Rangers, Celtic will have to make use of the January transfer window with nine-in-a-row hanging in the balance. By now, it should be pretty clear that Steven Gerrard’s side are genuine title contenders and cannot be taken lightly in this title race. Sunday marked the second Derby in a row in which the Hoops were outplayed by their Glasgow rivals.
The Hoops fans will be very concerned with the manner in which the Rangers managed to dominate the defending champions in their own backyard. At times it looked like the players were being bullied by their much more physical opponents. And Lennon will surely be hoping to add some steel to this squad in January as he looks to find a solution as soon as possible.
Initially, it was believed that the club would do well to fill some squad positions in January and the first-team did not need any tweaking. Those plans should be immediately scraped though after Sunday’s toothless display. And Charlie Nicholas believes that Celtic must make a marquee signing in the upcoming transfer window.
Speaking with the Daily Record, Nicholas said:
“Celtic will be looking to bring two or three players in.
“They probably need a striker who will have to settle for being a back-up to 24-goal Odsonne Edouard.
“If there is a bit of stardust or somebody who can make a statement, then they should pull out all the stops, but there is no point in filling out the squad.”
The momentum is clearly on the Rangers’ side after Sunday’s result. But a marquee signing in January could tilt the balance back in Celtic’s favour. And with nine-in-a-row on the line, the last thing the board can afford to do at this moment is penny-pinch.
