Charlie Wyke to sign for Wigan as Celtic opt against signing free agent

Charlie Wyke looks set to move to Wigan as Celtic appear to have opted against signing the free agent. Northern Echo and Sunderland fan media outlet Roker Report claim that the player will be moving to Wigan Athletic in a deal worth £10k.

The 28-year-old had an impressive season for Sunderland last year, racking up 35 goals in all competitions but couldn’t help the Black Cats achieve promotion. Nottingham Forest, Millwall and Cardiff have also been linked with a move for him as he looks to do something that Sunderland have struggled to do, get out of the third tier. Although it looks as if he will be staying in the division but with The Latics as they have likely offered him top money to remain in the league that he dominated last year.

Wyke has a reputation as a big target man but this season proved himself to be handy in front of goal. A lot of the goals that he scored in the 2020/21 season appeared to be from crosses, whether heading or finishing. There had been significant links between Wyke and a move to Paradise; however, in recent weeks these talks cooled with Celtic signing Leigh Griffiths for another twelve months and Odsonne Edouard’s move to Leicester City collpasing. Celtic will look elsewhere and Wyke will move to Wigan. He was potentially worth a punt if he was within a certain budget and suited the manager’s style but clearly Celtic have passed this chance up and probably rightly so given the wages being discussed.
