CHARLTON ATHLETIC are set to offer 20-year-old Alfie Doughty a new deal ahead of the January transfer window. Doughty has been the subject of interest from Celtic and would be free to negotiate terms around a summer move then, meaning Lee Bowyer is desperate to keep the versatile left-winger in London.
Speaking to London News Online, Bowyer says that talks are underway and he is hopeful that a deal can be done to extend his stay with the League One side.
“We’ve just got to see where we’re at with Alfie and his agent but we’re hopeful that we can get something done there.
“Like I’ve said before, this is the right place for him to be at the moment – especially with his injury as well now.
“He needs to focus on just getting back and having that security behind him, I think. Hopefully we can get that one done.”
Celtic made a number of bids during the summer transfer window but opted against paying over the odds for the talented youngster. Instead, they signed Diego Laxalt on loan from AC Milan as a replacement for Bolingoli with the Uruguayan impressing. Doughty can play in attack and defence and would almost be like a Jonny Hayes type signing, high energy and versatility.
Celtic may see the left side depleted with Elyounoussi and Laxalt’s loan deals concluding in the summer. However, there is the 10IAR question that needs entered before any recruitment for next season is considered.
