Chris Sutton is wrong, Jota doesn’t lack ambition

Jota doesn’t have a lack of ambition, he’s only human…

It’s only a matter of time now before Jota puts pen to paper on a lucrative deal with Saudi side Al-Ittihad. The deal came out of the blue and has took most folk by surprise, but now it’s sinking in as it gets closer to completion.

The majority of Celtic supporters while disappointed are accepting of the Portuguese players decision, he was a fans favourite not just for his displays on the park but his attitude off it. He bought into what our club was all about, he was in sync with the supporters. He’s a great player and an even better person.

There have been an element who have been critical of his move. Some Supporters and pundits have had a pop at him saying his decision shows a lack of ambition, saying he’s only going for the money. You don’t say, who in their right mind is going to turn down £190k a week tax free? No one is the answer.

Chris Sutton had a real go at him this morning in his newspaper column. He accused Jota of throwing his career down the toilet. I usually agree with most of Chris’s points, but he’s away off the mark with this one.

Far from throwing his career down the toilet, Jota is joining a league that’s on the up, with Cristiano Ronaldo amongst others now in the Gulf state. His new team mates will include Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante, how is that showing a lack of ambition? Yes the money is also a main attraction, but it’s a better move for him than a move to a mid table or relegation threatened EPL side, now that would be a lack of ambition.

Chris should ask himself what he would have done at that age if he was offered a life changing sum of money, he wouldn’t think twice and no one would blame him, just as no one should show a grudge towards Jota.

All the best young man.

About Author

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. You are spot on. Sutton and Hartson and others are dinosaurs and slightly racist. Believing in the superiority of European , principally English football. Players are going to start flooding into the Saudi League, lessening the appeal of the EPL. In truth the EPL is responsible for the death of football as it sold itself to Sky 30 years ago. Allwhoring their players to all Saudi clubs that matters is selling TV packages. The supporters who attend games are an after thought. The EPL is less interesting than it ever has been. They mock Scottish football yet only 2 or 3 clubs are in with a chance of winning it. Only an idiot would put any money on anyone other than Man City winning it again next season. 14 clubs in the EPL play for a draw every week and only have one desperate goal survive for another year. The Armchair fans across the globe (the only ones that count) are getting bored of it. They want to see the big names. The Saudi’s will attract the big names and agents will be flogging their clients to all Saudi clubs. Within 5 years there will may be a Gulf League which will usurp the EPL and CL and will be where all players want to play. UEFA are determined to change European football to benefit the big clubs making them even richer, enabling them to keep the big players. But will they be able to compete with the Saudis, Emiratis and Qataris. I’m not sure? That would require debt and they already have too much of that. Big changes coming.

  2. Is everyone forgetting that this is Saudi Arabia we’re talking about. The most detestable of the Islamic regimes. Their “laws” are at best barbaric, and if it wasn’t for their money and pro western stance (at present) we would have them in tje same box as Iran. Jota should be ashamed to accept their filthy, blood stained money, as should all the other football mercenaries involved in this circus.

    • We’ll be receiving money from Saudi Arabia ,a lot of money. We should just give it all to charity?
