Timothy Weah is someone that Celtic fans have mixed feelings about, the USA international spent 6 months on loan at the club back in 2019. The son of former Ballon D’Or winner George played 13 times for the club and scored three goals, however he left under a cloud somewhat as he didn’t finish the season due to commitments with his international side, with the USA heading to the Under 21s World Cup.
In the 3-2 victory over Lille at Celtic Park on Thursday, Weah fired home a very good goal to level the scores at 2-2 midway through the second half. After allowing himself a brief celebration he stopped himself fully going for it, and showed a little respect for his former teammates and manager.
Thankfully for Celtic the goal only spurred the Hoops on to victory, as a short time later David Turnbull smashed home the winning goal after great play by Kris Ajer on the right hand side.
Afterwards Weah gave an interview to BT Sport, which showed a real level of class and respect to his former club.
“Everything clicked that I was at Celtic, and I didn’t want to disrespect the players and disrespect the coaching staff” the young American said.
Weah has been struggling for match-time of late with Lille after a bad hamstring tear, so this goal will possibly help him push forward with the French title contenders, who already qualified for the knockout phase of the competition. Their second place finish means that Weah could be back in Scotland at the start of next year if the draw for the knock-out pairs Lille with theRangers.
Stay classy, Timo! Some of his Celtic highlights are shown below…
