Clinching the league in 2001 against St Mirren

Clinching the league 2001…

We’ve had many a good result against tonight’s opponents St Mirren at Celtic Park. Some high scoring games, but one that might not have been the most exciting of games in terms of football was played back in April 2001.

Celtic were of course closing in on a first title under Martin O’Neill. Our first in three years and only our second in 13 years.

Three points were all we needed to get over the line. The Buddies were having a dismal campaign and were heading for relegation, so a comfortable Celtic win looked on the cards.

It didn’t pan out that way and although we got over the line it was more a stumble than a stroll. On the day I may add, as the season was won a canter. A deserved title due to our fantastic form.

Our lacklustre approach that day was understandable due to the occasion and the tension these games bring. Sometimes it’s just about getting the job done, and if that’s in a workmanlike fashion then so be it. It’s the result that counts after all.

Despite big game players like Henrik Larsson, Lubo Moravcik and Alan Thompson on the park it was Tommy Johnson who grabbed the winner, albeit a scuffed finish, but they all count and it allowed us to celebrate the first of many titles this century.
