It’s a song every Celtic fan knows, which often beams around Paradise on the sound system. Willie Maley is certainly deserving of the tribute, after all he gave over 50 years of service to the club as player and manager. Maley also undertook other roles such as serving as the accountant and sitting on the early Celtic committees.

Now a group of Celtic fans in Newry, Co Down, have joined together with the ambition of erecting a statue of Maley in the town, a permanent memorial of the Celtic great in his place of birth.

A Twitter page was recently set up and committee established as the Irish fans aim to make the idea a reality.
