“Perhaps our club isn’t being run as well as the board would like to believe?”…

Copenhagen showing it can be done, not just in a financial sense, but they also had belief…

Congratulations to F.C. Copenhagen who qualified for the last 16 of the champions league despite being in a tough group that contained Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Manchester United.

Not only are the trio much bigger sides in comparison, but their financial muscle also dwarfed that of the Danes. Indeed their wage bill for players is also much lower than Celtic’s. That led to much debate on social media amongst the Celtic supporters regarding our own sides inability to compete at the same level.

It’s a viable debate and one that should be an eye opener to not only those in charge at our club, but to the coaching staff and the players. The Danish side after all spent less on transfer fees while also operating on a much lower wage bill than Celtic. So it shows it can be done.

Of course the right tactical approach and luck played a massive part, but more importantly they had the belief that they could compete at this level. That’s what’s missing from our club, the belief we can compete at this level. We seem happy just to qualify and make up the numbers.

Copenhagen are proof it can be accomplished. The manager and players might say they’ve learned from facing such sides as Atletico, Lazio and Feyenoord, but the lesson they should be learning was taught by a side that wasn’t even in our group.
