This international break will be of great benefit to Callum McGregor and Celtic…
The international break is always an unwanted distraction especially when Celtic is on such a good run, but one player will feel the benefit of this particular one is our captain Callum McGregor.
These will be the first Scotland games since Callum announced his retirement from international football, and he will be in the uncharted territory of having some rest while Steve Clarke’s men negotiate two tough fixtures against Poland at Hampden tomorrow evening and Portugal in Lisbon on Sunday.
Callum would have undoubtedly been involved in both games, but now he’s free of the danger of risking picking up any niggling knocks and running himself into the ground. And he’ll be able to rest up and return to Celtic fully refreshed rather than with heavy legs after a gruelling international double-header.

That can only be a good thing for Callum and the club. He will be raring to go when we play Hearts a week on Saturday, and with the Champions League almost upon us the Celtic captain will throughly feel the benefit of being free of the demands of playing international football for Scotland.
Callum is so important to our side, and playing less games means he will be more fitter and sharper than before. You’ve seen the start he’s had to the season, and he will only get better as the season progresses, hopefully maintaining his impressive goalscoring streak and taking that into the Champions League.

Callum’s decision to retire will be a big loss to Steve Clarke and Scotland, but Celtic will reap all the benefits and so too will the Celtic captain. It was the correct decision made at the right time by such a clever footballer.
