COYGIG – “Looking forward to the Glasgow Derby, it is one of those fixtures you look out for every season,” Sarah Ewens

A single Sarah Ewens gaol was enough to win the three points against a dogged Spartans side who seemed happy to sit in an limit the Celtic attack that last weekend put ten goals past Hearts.

Ewens was also on the scoresheet last weekend, perhaps scoring the pick of the ten goals and that was also extra special for Sarah herself as it was her 50th Celtic goal. Goal number 51 might not have been as spectacular but it was certainly more vital as it secured the win and gave Celtic back to back league wins following the opening day defeat to Champions Glasgow.

And that win sets this talented Celtic side up for next Sunday’s trip across the city to play theRangers at their training centre. That Glasgow Derby match kicks off at 2-pm on Sunday.

Sarah Ewens, speaking to the official Celtic website, was more than satisfied with the narrow 1-0 win over Spartans. “We are delighted to get the three points, it was a hard game against Spartans. It has come down to one goal and it’s got us the three points and I’ve helped the team. It is probably not my finest goal, but I’ll take it,” she said.

“I just think, when you put them under pressure it can always lead to a mistake. I’ve just went for the ball, luckily she’s turned one way and I’ve intercepted it and it has gone into the back of the net. Happy with it of course, it is a goal and I will take any goal,” Sarah said.

Sarah carried an injury into the 2-0 opening day defeat to the Champions and that clearly restricted her involvement in the game but she has subsequently scored in both matches since that early set-back. “I am happy to be back, but still at the point where I can’t quite do 90 minutes as of yet. But, happy to be back on the pitch.

“I got a calf injury just before the Glasgow City match – it was very frustrating. Going into that game, I wasn’t fully fit and I wasn’t able to play my game at all. However, the last two games, I have been able to push on and try to show what I can do, so I am delighted to be back from injury,” she said.

TheRangers are undefeated in their opening three matches so the Celtic ghirls will be looking to end that particular run on Sunday. “Always looking forward to the Glasgow Derby, it is one of those fixtures you look out for every season. There will be a lot of focus on next week.

Champions Glasgow City FC currently are leading the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 table with 9 points, ahead of theRangers on goal difference with Celtic 3 points behind on 6 points. Celtic’s 10-0 win last weekend against Hearts means that a win at theRangers training centre on Sunday will allow Celtic to leapfrog theRangers women in the table.

“The last two games has given us confidence, we played well today, we controlled the game well. It has put us in good stead for next week,” Sarah added. COYGIG!
