IT had been a miserable season for Celtic and Rangers arrived at Celtic Park on this day in 1993 on a 44 game run since their last domestic defeat.

The Celtic team was Bonner, Boyd, Wdowczyk, Grant, McNally, Galloway, Slater, P McStay, McAvennie, Payton and Collins and after McAvennie was denied a stonewall penalty Celtic got the opening goal their play deserved after McStay set up Collins fire his low shot past Goram and into the corner of the Rangers net.

There was more joy for the Celtic support – which included the then very famous actors from Coronation Street – in the 52nd minute. There was some indecision between Rangers keeper Goram and central defender McPherson and Andy Paton had the simple task of knocking the ball in for number two.

Rangers got one back six minutes from time though Hateley but Celtic held out not only to take the points but also to stop Rangers undefeated run.

Here’s what happened…
