Dalglish At The Double

On this day in 1976, Celtic hosted Motherwell at Paradise. The Bhoys were without Jim Casey and Johnny Doyle, who both sustained ligament injuries in the previous game against Dundee, whilst on the other hand, there was a welcome boost in the form of a return from injury for Dixie Deans and Bobby Lennox.

Celtic went into the match just one point clear with 28 games having been played, making this a must win encounter against fourth placed Motherwell. The Hoops had the assistance of the wind in the first half and took full advantage to rush into a 4-0 lead within 39 minutes!

Dalglish opened the scoring on 15 minutes, before Deans doubled the lead ten minutes later. Dalglish then scored his second in the 34th minute and Lennox compounded the Steelmen’s misery when he made it four, just five minutes later.

The second half was uneventful, with the score finishing 4-0. Nevertheless, the bulk of the 29,000 supporters at Celtic Park that day left the stadium happy.

There was even a cheer at full time when the news came though that a Celtic reserve side featuring George McCluskey and Tommy Burns had defeated Motherwell reserves 1-0 at Fir Park.
