Alfredo Morelos’ disciplinary record has been a hot topic in Scottish football circles. While the Colombian does get goals in bunches, referees are not too fond of him either and as a result he can be a liability to the Rangers team at times. In 124 appearances for the Rangers, he has been sent off on 6 occasions and yellow carded 34 times.
This season there were rumblings that Morelos had turned over a new leaf and improved his discipline. But those went out of the window when the Colombian got sent off for his celebrations aimed at the opposition support after scoring against Motherwell.
Davie Provan has laughed off the claims of an improved Morelos and questioned what the Colombian would do if he managed to score against Celtic next Sunday. In his column in The Scottish Sun, the former Celtic midfielder wrote:
“So much for the improved discipline of Alfredo Morelos.
“The Colombian’s needless red card at Fir Park was a kick in the teeth for his manager and team-mates.
“Spare me the idea he was reacting to abuse. Stick is part of the game.
“And if Morelos can’t be trusted to rein it in at Motherwell, what can Steven Gerrard expect if he finally breaks his duck against Celtic next Sunday?”
That is a huge ‘if’ though. Morelos has a terrible record against the Hoops, having not scored against them in a dozen tries. He even ended up missing a vital penalty in the Scottish League Cup final earlier this month and there is no doubt that the duck against Celtic certainly plays on his mind. For all the claims of him being a deadly finisher and ruthless scorer, he seldom looks anything better than average when facing the reigning Scottish champions.
