Willie Fernie had an excellent playing career at Celtic Park.

He arrived at the club in October 1948 after a spell with Leslie Hearts and went on to make 317 appearances in the Hoops, using his wonderful dribbling ability to be the ‘provider’ to the forwards of the teams of that era as well as notching 74 goals for himself.

His biggest moments were the Coronation Cup of 1953, the League/Scottish Cup ‘double’ of 1953/54 and the League Cup wins of 1956 and 1957, the latter of the two victories – ‘Hampden in the Sun’ – making legends of all eleven players.

Willie also was in the Scotland squads for the World Cups of 1954 ( Switzerland) and 1958 (Sweden).

On this day in 1967, Willie Fernie returned to Celtic Park as coach.
