NEIL LENNON has confirmed that under-fire defender Shane Duffy has been ‘feeling’ the pressure in recent weeks but backs the Irishman to come good. The 28-year-old has played ten games for Celtic since joining from Brighton but has been caught out in the last three games – prompting criticism from fans.
The Celtic manager was speaking ahead of the Group H game away to Lille as the Scottish Champions face a tough task against the leaders of Ligue 1. As reported by the Scottish Sun, Lennon confirmed he has held talks with Duffy in order to make sure his head is in right place after a tough week.
“Shane is a big, strong boy.
“I had a chat with him the other night. He’s feeling it but he will come through it.
“We just need to show him a bit of patience. He made a mistake at the weekend, but the vitriol that comes after it is incredible.
“Again, it is my job to support him and that is exactly what I will do.
“It isn’t the first time players have been thrown into the lion’s den in terms of insults and criticism.
“I know what Shane is going through but he has the character and personality to bounce back straight away.”
Duffy, the Ireland captain, will be hoping to bounce back to top form in tomorrow’s Europa League match versus Lille. Duffy was signed to be a no-nonsense presence at the back but has found himself exposed on numerous occasions.
Despite a strong start to life in Glasgow, Duffy has felt the pressure following the defeat to Rangers and made an error in the draw against Aberdeen last weekend. He will be boosted by Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed returning to training as defensive cover.
