It was well documented when Boli Bolingoli flouted Scottish Government rules concerning coronavirus and went to Spain for 24 hours, without telling anyone or quarantining upon his return. As a result, Nicola Sturgeon postponed Celtic’s next two matches and did the same Aberdeen after eight of their players went out to a bar linked to a covid cluster.
Now, football fans are questioning the double standards on display as an Edinburgh Rugby player broke laws concerning public gatherings and attended a house party. Unlike Bolingoli, the rugby player has tested positive for the virus. Other players were also present at the party and three youth players from the club have had to self isolate.
Despite this, Edinburgh Rugby’s overseas match in France this weekend, is still set to go ahead. Many are left stunned at this double standard and also question where the yellow card, that Sturgeon famously issued to Scottish Football, is for rugby.
This news has left fans even more frustrated as a rugby match was recently allowed to be used as a test event with fans in attendance at Murrayfield. Meanwhile, Celtic were not allowed to have fans in the stadium as a test on that same weekend.
Many football fans feel rugby is getting preferential treatment over football just now, and who could blame them?
