BRENDAN RODGERS started the summer qualifiers for the Champions League looking to play a new formation with two strikers and it certainly seemed to be working with the two French Bhoys – Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard looking the part.

Leigh Griffiths had picked up another one of those frustrating injuries so had to sit on the sidelines but he was back and looked sharp for his half hour in the second half against Livingston.

Moussa Dembele of course has since suffered another hamstring injury but the tantalising prospect of an Edouard and Griffiths combo tomorrow night is very much on the cards.

Brendan Rodgers knows that the Greeks are traditionally vulnerable on the road but strong at home so the Irishman will want to build a healthy lead to take to Athens next Tuesday. If that can be big enough to effectively end the tie then all the better.

So he may be tempted to go with two up top and neither Edouard or Griffiths has ever let the manager down.

Edouard, or French Eddie to the support, was speaking yesterday ahead of the AEK Athens match.

“AEK Athens is a difficult tie for us. Obviously, they are a very good side and it will help us that we have now played out first Premiership game against Livingston,” he said.

“I think we’re improving every time we play. Our rhythm is better with each performance.

“Of course, it’s a pity Moussa is out injured and will miss the ties against Athens. I just want to keep doing what I am doing and I don’t feel pressure of additional responsibility.

“Hopefully, I can play well and the goals will keep coming.”
