SHANE DUFFY has been named captain of Ireland for tonight’s match against Slovakia. Stephen Kenny’s decision to make the Derry-born, Celtic defender the captain for the Euro play-off semi-final shuts up Gary Breen – who said the move to Celtic could jeopardise Duffy’s Ireland career.

Kenny confirmed last month that he was happy to see Duffy move to Celtic as it would give him the opportunity to compete for trophies and play European football. Breen has made himself look a bit of a joke with the comments.

The English-born defender, Breen, has said that the move could see Duffy becoming a worse player as he will not be as tested as he would be in England. Breen, who had spells at Barnet and Gillingham, said that Duffy’s place in the Ireland set up would be at risk but Kenny has moved to rubbish these claims. Celtic gives Duffy first team football as well as the opportunity to play for his boyhood club, which can only help him play for Ireland as he helps Celtic compete domestically and in Europe.
