English presenter says Celtic are bigger club than Manchester City

English presenter and commentator Andy Townsend has said that Celtic are a bigger club than English Champions Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side are currently one of the best club sides in football but the former Ireland Internationalist believes that the worldwide reach of Celtic makes it unique.

Speaking on Talksport, Townsend said that City are bigger than Chelsea but are still lagging behind Celtic, Manchester United and Liverpool – who he says are bigger.

The reigning European Champions were beaten on penalties by Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid at The Etihad to set up a Semi Final against Bayern Munich at the expense of City. Whilst they have been attempting to grow their fanbase in recent years, they still fall short in terms of global support with Manchester United and Liverpool having huge overseas followings.

Last week, The Celtic Star’s Editor asked Brendan about how Celtic would get on in England and the Irishman said that the club would do well given the global support, the infrastructure currently in place and the riches that English teams enjoy from sponsorship. The idea has been floated on a few occasions; however, it is unlikely to ever transpire.
