Even Alan Hutton thinks Roy Keane would be a shambles as the next Celtic boss

Occasionally you will see some pundits make some reasonable points, but you can generally guarantee that any time an ex Celitc or player from the Rangers talks about the other side they are going to be disingenuous.

Alan Hutton talks about Celtic on a regular basis and it tends to be the case that he’s tipping big players like Eddy or Ajer for a move down south – clearly in the hope that Celtic will be severely weakened by the loss.

The topic of Roy Keane taking over as manager has been doing the rounds for a couple of weeks now, and it’s hard to find many people who actually think he is the man to turn things round and start another long period of success.

In Keane’s favour he’s likely to come in and initially turn things round with a good bout of discipline, but that act runs out of steam pretty quickly and the club could end up in even more of a mess.

Interestingly Hutton has been speaking to Football Insider about the prospect of Keane taking over at Celtic, and even he doesn’t think it’s a wise option:

He’s done well, he did well at Sunderland, he’s been at Ipswich, he’s had that experience. People definitely listen to what he’s got to say. Whether he’s the man for the rebuilding job, I’m not so sure.

“He’s a huge name. It would be a great rivalry to see him come up against Steven Gerrard again but it’s a difficult one. I’ve actually thought of this before and I’m not too sure, if I’m honest.

“Whether he’s the man to do that, I’ll suppose we’ll have to wait and see. I’m not sure. I’ve only had him as a number two, I’ve never actually seen him out on his own. It would definitely be fascinating for him to come up north and have a go at it.

“You need to remember, you have to add into that the pressure situation. We’re talking about a goldfish bowl where you’re under pressure daily to produce.

“It’s such a big job. They have to get it right and quickly or Rangers will be miles in front of them.”

There’s a reason that big-name players rarely become hugely successful managers, and it tends to be because they simply cannot get used to the idea that the players they manage don’t have the same mindset or the ability that they had.

It’s well known that Roy Keane played with a dedication and competitiveness that very few players can match, while society has generally changed to his personality may not blend well with some of the players that he needs to manage.

Perhaps he should be the number two instead?

He’s been out of the game for a while as a head coach but he was never really praised for his tactical ability in previous roles, and his appointment would have a huge chance of going wrong pretty quickly.

Perhaps as a number two he could be useful, but if we have a situation where even Alan Hutton admits it’s going to be a disaster then it shows it’s probably not going to be a good idea.
