Australian media sources have confirmed that Everton will be the third club participating in the Ange Postecoglou Homecoming Tournament in Sydney in November, joining Celtic and Western Sydney Wanderers and replacing theRangers who chickened out after realising that they were very much the unpopular support act as Ange returned home with his Scottish Champions to contest the Sydney Super Cup.
The organisers had a contractual agreement with the latest Ibrox club to appear in the cup competition where each of the three clubs play each other once and the Chas-strapped club formed in 2012 by Charles Green was on course to net around £3m in fees for their participation. However reacting to a supporter backlash, things began to get even uglier in Govan, their board decided to breach the contract by withdrawing.
Celtic supporters it should be noted were not too happy about facing them in Australia but with the backlash across the city much more intense, many decided to sit it out and wait for them to be the fall-guys.
That’s pretty much how it’s played out and after apparently having talks with Italian sides the organisers have settled on Everton, to make it. Scotland v England contest as the Scottish Champions take on Frank Lampard’s Premier League outfit in late November.
A report by Australian media outlet FTBL has advised that Everton have now been confirmed as the replacements for theRangers.
The games are scheduled to take place between 16-20 November during a period when there will be no domestic football here or in Australia due to the World Cup. With Scotland failing to qualify the likes of Celtic captain Callum McGregor, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor and James Forrest will now by available for the Sydney Super Cup, although they much rather have been heading to Qatar with Scotland.
