GARY MACKAY-STEVEN has said that Celtic are ‘worthy Champions’ and deserve the 9-in-a-row honour. The New York City man spent two-and-a-half years with the Scottish Champions before leaving for Aberdeen as part of the deal that brought Jonny Hayes to Celtic.
Speaking to BBC, the 29-year-old discussed the title situation in Scotland and the former Celtic man has said that Celtic are deserving of their crown when the time comes around.
“Obviously in the top division we are still waiting to see and it is hard knowing right and wrong about what to do.
“Obviously in an ideal world you would like to play it to a conclusion to know every club’s true position.
“But going back to Celtic they will be worthy champions when the time comes as well.”
Celtic were 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership before Coronavirus suspended the season indefinitely. The league passed the infamous vote on Good Friday which gave the SPFL the ability to call the league. UEFA have said they will allow the decision to be made so it is a waiting game for Celtic as to when they are awarded the league title.
With form considered, it is likely that Celtic would have extended their lead at the top of the league – especially considering two derby games that would have increased the lead.
Whilst it is not the way anyone would have envisaged 9IAR being won, owing to the pandemic, we have to make concessions.
Mackay-Steven was reunited with former Celtic manager Ronny Deila in New York, who was appointed manager in January; however, with the Big Apple the epicentre of coronavirus in the USA, the pair have been in lockdown for some time.
