Farewell Matt, all the best from a grateful Celtic support

Matt O’Riley’s time at Celtic looks to have came to an end as the club accepted a reported deal worth up to £30 million from Brighton.

A league winner in his first season, a treble winner in his next, and a double in his final season. Matt’s goals and assists had a big say in our success especially last season when he went up a level under Brendan Rodgers.

Matt is only 23 and I’m sure he’ll go far in the game. Although with no disrespect to Brighton he should be looking to aiming higher than the Seagulls in due course. I wouldn’t be too surprised if he went on to play for a top four side in the EPL, or further afield in one of the big European leagues and of course Celtic is likely to have a sizeable sell-on clause in the imminent deal.

Not only is Matt a fantastic player, but he’s a decent guy also, he will be sorely missed by everyone at Celtic from his teammates to the manager and coaches and of course the entire Celtic support.

All the best Matt and thanks a million for your contribution. You’ll always be welcome at Celtic Park.

  1. Going be a big miss but when you lose a hero like Matt it is hard to take, best of luck to you big man..

  2. Funny auld world.
Player leaves to better himself.A Hero.
Manager leaves to better himself.A pariah.
    Adh mor Matt.
    Hail Hail.

  3. Even though it was expected that Matt would be moving on this summer, there’s still a massive sence of loss to ourselves, all the same?
Still expected Matt to be moving to a club with a far higher profile than Brighton, so very surprised still the Brighton is his destination?
Regardless, our own attentions have to turn to the potential replacement now?
We are now potentially looking at at least 2 more midfield players to be added now imo?
Could even be 3 depending upon what Rodgers has in mind regarding Holm for the season?
Still don’t believe that as a club we should be in the current situation we find our midfield areas in at present?
Hopefully the additions have been identified, and close to be confirmed now?
Yet the same situation is currently in place throughout the whole squad at present also?
Sad day only highlighted with anger and frustration to be finding ourselves in a situation, that shouldn’t be occurring imo?

  4. Burn down the old stand and at least force the Board to spend some money rebuilding it.
It seems to be the only way to get this shower to part with any money.

Seriously though, it is the hope that kills you. The hope that once, just once, we would get players in to make an attempt to make an impact in Europe. Constantly selling our best players, regardless of how much money we have in the bank, while talking the talk.
Embarrassed in Europe year after year only to be patronised and told that lessons have been learned and yet the exact same shambles unfolds in the next transfer window.
No one is accountable for our lamentable recruitment. Utter, utter shambles with the only thing to show is grotesque greed.

  5. Best wishes for your future Matt and you leave us with wonderful memories.
It was an honour to have you play for our club and a pleasure to watch you play and for conducting yourself in such a professional manner with such a refreshingly honest commitment and sense of enjoyment. You will always be in our hearts and never forgotten. You will always be welcome back here at Paradise.
    You’ll never walk alone.
