Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis has heaped praise on Kasper Schmeichel, claiming he believes the Celtic goalkeeper to be underrated. Lewis praised Schmeichel, who stepped into the void left by Joe Hart over the summer.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Lewis spoke in glowing terms about the Premier League winner.

“Schmeichel is a top class goalkeeper. For me, he has been underrated throughout his whole career.

“I do not know whether having his dad there has been a help or hindrance for him.

“Because he has been for me a top, top ‘keeper.

“You look at the amount of caps he has for Denmark and he was captain for a little while.

“He is a real leader.”

Celtic face Aberdeen in the top of the table clash on Saturday, which will be an exciting watch. Schmeichel will likely be called upon over the course of the game but will need to be sharp to deny Jimmy Thelin’s Dons.

Schmeichel joined the club on a one-year contract after leaving Anderlecht, replacing his former Man City teammate Hart between the sticks at Celtic Park. There is a one year option to extend, which Schmeichel might fancy exercising given the way he’s taken to the club like a duck to water.

The Dane was also joined by Viljami Sinisalo from Aston Villa who is expected to be the club’s longterm No.1 when Schmeichel hangs up his gloves or moves on.
