Former AC Milan star Massimo Oddo has raved about his experience at Celtic Park in an Instagram Live Q&A. The defender visited Paradise with Carlo Ancelotti’s men in the Champions League back in 2006/07 but ‘I Rossoneri’ were held by Gordon Strachan’s side.
The side, which included Paolo Maldini, Clarence Seedorf, Kaka and Andrea Pirlo, left Parkhead with a 0-0 draw to take back to the San Siro but Oddo has claimed that they were ‘happy’ with this side after being surprised by the stern test Celtic gave them.
“It was an under-par Milan, domestically they were having a hard time and when I arrived they were not in the top positions in the league.
“In the draw we were happy to get Celtic, on paper they were the most beatable team.
“We went to play the first leg in a wonderful stadium with fans who create an incredible scene.
“We didn’t play well, we drew 0-0 and risked losing it.
“We were convinced we’d go through in the return leg, but the game proved to be difficult.
“Celtic caused us problems and they took us to extra-time. Then Kaka invented this goal out of nothing, and that was the birth of the great Kaka who took us to the final.”
A Kaka goal deep into extra-time gave Ancelotti’s side the victory despite calls for a penalty after Jiri Jarosik appeared to have a shot blocked by the hand of Maldini early on. In reality though, Milan laid siege on the Celtic goal and an inspired performance from Artur Boruc kept them at bay. That was until the brilliant Kaka picked the ball up in the Milan half and ran through the Celtic midfield then defence before slotting the ball under Boruc. If only Lennon or Sno had fouled him..
Milan inevitably went on to win the Champions League in Athens that year by beating Liverpool 2-1. It was a Milan side, without Oddo that were beaten by Celtic at Parkhead that same year, with a late Scott McDonald goal giving Celtic the three points.
