Former Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata is a target for Ligue 1 side Rennes as the Belgian Internationalist looks to seal a move from Hertha Berlin. Boyata, who is currently on Euro 2020 duty with Roberto Martinez’s Red Devils, it had been suggested that Celtic should move for him but it appears that the player is interested in moving to the side that finished 6th in the French top flight.

According to Get Football News France, Boyata has spoken to the club about joining the project in the north of France.

Ange Postecoglou needs to sign a couple of central defenders and The Celtic Star’s Editor suggested that the club should look to re-sign him as he has just one year remaining on his deal in the Bundesliga. There is a degree of logic to bringing him back but Postecoglou will likely have his own targets in mind as well as the player fancying a different league, no doubt.

Boyata joined from Man City in 2015 as a replacement for Jason Denayer and despite playing in the first team during his debut season, he fell out of the first team picture as Brendan Rodgers took charge only to make an incredible resurgence in 2017 to become a mainstay in the Invincible Treble winning side.

Boyata made 135 appearances for the Scottish Champions, scoring 15 goals and assisting 9 times. He left the club for Berlin on a free transfer after failing to agreeing a deal with Celtic. The player was a consistent performer for Celtic and probably should have been rewarded with a new deal but it appeared as if the club and player were at crossroads with the player expecting to be allowed to make a move to La Liga or the Premier League.
