Former Celtic boss Ronny Deila confirmed as new Standard Liege manager

Ronny Deila has official left New York City and has been appointed as the new manager at Belgian side Standard Liege, as indeed we reported on Saturday. In just over two years at New York City Ronny build strong foundations for moving forward, with his assistant coach Nick Cushing taking over in an interim basis. The former Celtic manager gave NYFC their first-ever MLS Cup triumph, which was the Norwegian’s his first trophy success since leading Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title in 2015/16.

Ronny will now be heading back to European football, and its Belgium and not England despite being strongly linked with the vacancy at Blackburn Rovers after another former Celtic boss, Tony Mowbray left at the end of last season.

Deila will now be working alongside Fergal Harkin the recently appointed Director of Football at Standard Liege. The former City Group football executive was strongly linked with a similar move to Celtic last summer but nothing came of it and it appears that that remit is now being handled by Mark Lawwell.

Ronny these days will be an even better manager than the one who left Celtic with two title wins and a League Cup success. He lost twice in the Scottish Cup at Hampden in semi-finals, each time he could reflect on bad luck and poor refereeing.

We wish him all the best at Standard Liege.
