Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew was present at Lennoxtown for the preparations ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League game against Lazio. Mulgrew, who retired last month, is expected to transition into coaching at some stage and I was watching Brendan Rodgers and his team in their preparations for Matchday Two.

Taking to Instagram, Mulgrew thanked Rodgers and his staff for the ‘invaluable’ experience.

Mulgrew was part of the last home Champions League win and Rodgers will be hoping that his appearance will only assist in pushing his team towards three points on Wednesday.

Mulgrew was Lennon’s first signing in 2010 and played a variety of positions in his time at Celtic, including left wing in a win at Ibrox in 2011. He started his career at Celtic but after a loan move to Dundee United, he joined Aberdeen on a permanent basis. During his time at Pittodrie, he earned a move back to Celtic – scoring a sensational free kick at Celtic Park probably helped.

Mulgrew won five league titles and two Scottish Cups as well as winning the Player of the Year accolades in 2012 for a stunning season, in which he deputised as a central defender. The defender spent six years at Celtic, making 208 appearances and scoring 29 goals.
