Former Celtic goalkeeper David Marshall has announced his retirement from football after an impressive career in the game. Marshall spent two seasons at Hibs before his contract expired earlier this month; however, the Hibees confirmed that the player would be hanging up his gloves.
After arriving on a free transfer from QPR, Marshall made 86 appearances for the Hibees. As David Gray looks to kickstart his reign as manager, one of the first tasks will be replacing the experience of Marshall with a new No.1. The 39-year old has amassed an incredible 671 appearances across a good career between the sticks. Although, Celtic fans remember his time at the club with particular fondness.
Marshall made 50 appearances for Celtic, winning one league title, two Scottish Cups and one Scottish League Cup. Marshall was thrown into life at Paradise with a standout performance at Camp Nou to shutout Barcelona before an outstanding display at Ibrox.
It was expected that Marshall would grow into a long term No.1. However, the departure of Martin O’Neill and arrival of Gordon Strachan saw a shift in opinion around who should be No.1. Polish showstopper Artur Boruc was signed and claimed the jersey with Marshall unwilling to settle for second fiddle.
