Former Celtic striker Tony Watt returns to Motherwell, Fir Park side also sign Celtic’s Amy Sharkey

Former Celtic striker Tony Watt has returned to Motherwell on loan from Dundee United until the end of the season.

In his first spell at the Fir Park club, Watt made 70 appearances, scoring 19 times but the manner of his exit to join the Tannadice side in 2022 didn’t please may of the Motherwell supporters.

That though didn’t concern Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell who had no hesitation at bringing the well travelled striker back to the club.

“If you look at Tony’s record, he is available to play all the time,” Stuart Kettlewell told the official Motherwell FC website.

“He is a player who has done well here with goals and strong performances. We jumped at the chance to bring him back to Fir Park and Tony himself was desperate to return.

“Tony had lots of other options, both home and abroad, but he was fixated on coming back here.”

Tony Watt explained his decision to opt for Motherwell. “It’s so good to be back in the building,” Watt said. “I was itching to join Motherwell again and can’t wait to get stuck in.

“There’s obviously people who may not be too happy to see me back. I need to prove myself here and get people back on my side but that target is firmly set in my mind. I feel fit. I’ve been training and I have a full pre-season under my belt.”

Tony Watt of course scored one of the most iconic Celtic goals scored inside Celtic Park in the 21st century and will always be remembered fondly by the Celts support for that wonderful finish and magical night beating that brilliant Barcelona at the peak of its powers in the Champions League.

Meanwhile another signing of a striker for Motherwell has also been confirmed, this time it’s 16-year-old Celtic FC Women striker Amy Sharkey who has joined Motherwell Women on loan for the duration of the 24/25 SWPL campaign.

The youngster joined Celtic’s academy in early 2022 and has impressed when given the chance. At only 15, she made the bench for a huge cup final clash against Celtic’s rivals and made her debut shortly after, featuring against Hamilton Accies and Dundee United.

Sharkey even managed to find the net for her first top-flight goal, scoring a wonderful strike in a 9-0 victory over Dundee.

Speaking about her move, Sharkey told the official Motherwell FC website: “I want to experience regular first-team football and the club have a proven track record of developing young players and providing the platform to gain experience and progress both as a player and as a person.”

A fantastic move and a great chance for Sharkey to prove herself. Hopefully, she can impress Elena Sadiku this campaign and earn her spot in the squad next season.

Best of luck to Tony and Amy at Motherwell this season.
