Former Motherwell boss pips Celtic legend to St Mirren job

Former Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson appears set to beat Celtic legend Scott Brown to the St Mirren vacancy. The central midfielder is still captain at Aberdeen but is expected to be interviewed for the vacancy, despite talks progressing with the Morecambe manager.

According to The Daily Record, Robinson is St Mirren’s preferred target due to his experience of developing young players. However, Brown could yet convince the Paisley club’s hierarchy that he is capable of attaining top six success with the Buddies.

In a spell that spanned fourteen years, Brown lifted an incredible 22 trophies with Celtic. The club legend made 611 appearances having signed from Hibs in 2007. In that time, he scored 46 goals, 63 assists while picking up 142 yellow cards. Brown decided against remaining at Celtic for the rebuild under Ange Postecoglou and then opted for a player-coach role in the North East. Although, Stephen Glass was sacked and replaced by Jim Goodwin.

Brown is still registered as a player with Aberdeen despite them appearing to be willing to let him speak to St Mirren. The 36-year-old is clearly thinking about his life after playing and the opportunity to manage St Mirren may be the right one. Brown will certainly have ambitions to one day return to Celtic as manager at some stage but he will also know that the next opportunity may not necessary be the right opportunity.
