Former Celtic defender Efe Ambrose has signed a short term contract with Morton that will see him playing for the Scottish Championship club until the end of this season. The Nigerian international defender arrived at Celtic in August 2012, signing a three year deal with the club, signing from the Israeli club Ashdod for an undisclosed fee.
“Today is one of the happiest days of my life, signing for one of the biggest clubs in the world – a club I have known about since I was young,” the then 23 year old said, clearly delighted at his move to Celtic. Ambrose was a utility player able to operate in midfield but preferred by Neil Lennon as a central defender.
Initially Ambrose looked an assured performer in the middle of the Celtic defence but eventually his weaknesses were exposed and in reality he was probably played out of position, by Celtic and maybe the other Scottish clubs he’s played for ie Hibs, Livingston and St Johnstone. These days he is best suited to a sweeper role and will bring plenty of experience to the Cappielow club.
Efe had one mishap too many and eventually the Celtic support turned on him, after an own goal in a friendly in Dublin against Barcelona. The former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said of Fee Ambrose: “He’s an unlucky guy, bless him,” and that sort of sums his time at Celtic up. Nevertheless Efe left Celtic a half dozen winners medals including four league titles and a Scottish Cup an League Cup medal.
