Do Gerrard’s Rangers Pose a Threat to Celtic’s Dominance in the Division?

Celtic have bossed the Scottish Premiership for the best part of a decade but could their Glasgow rivals be ready to challenge them at the top?

Hoops fans enjoyed watching the Gers fall from grace in 2012 but now it might be more exhilarating to have a proper tussle for the title like in the past before the old club died. The fact that Brendan Rodgers’ former captain Steven Gerrard has entered the hot seat at Ibrox Stadium will definitely spice things up a bit in the season ahead. But could Rangers pose an actual threat to Celtic with the former Liverpool man in charge?

Old Pals Now Turned Rivals

Rodgers and Gerrard will have fond memories of their past relationship at Anfield, where the two worked together for just over three seasons. The stunning campaign of 2013-14, when the Reds came so agonisingly close to winning their first ever Premier League title, will live long in the memory of both managers, but they will have to put all that behind them moving forward. After all, they now sit in opposing dugouts for one of the fiercest rivalries in the world of football.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the two men handle their emotions when the atmosphere of a Glasgow derby takes hold. It’s likely that, off the pitch, they will remain friendly, but they will both need to show a different side to their personalities when the whistle blows on match days.

To some supporters, the managers of these two powerhouses of Scottish football should be bitter enemies, and there has been uproar in the past when it has turned out that some of the members of each club have been friendly with one another outside of the game.

For instance, one newspaper considered it front page news when Celtic coach Alan Thompson was once seen enjoying a pint with Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Could Gerrard’s new job turn him against his old mate?

Gerrard Perhaps Still too New to Threaten Celtic

Rangers enjoyed an excellent pre-season campaign under the stewardship of their new boss, and Gerrard’s impressive start has fuelled speculation that he could be well-suited to management. In the former Liverpool captain’s first home game at the helm, 40,000 fans flocked to Ibrox to see what the new man in charge was made of.

The ex-England international didn’t disappoint either, as his side knocked English League Two side Bury for six in an exceptionally dominant display.

Gerrard has brought in a number of new additions over the summer to bolster his squad and increase his options. Many of these have been on display during pre-season and have instantly clicked in the young coach’s setup.

Of the ten players that Gerrard has brought in so far, Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson have looked the most impressive, and have filled gaping holes in the side from last season.

Despite this promising start, Gerrard has taken on a mammoth task for his first managerial position. As Rangers boss, there will be an extreme amount of pressure, and he will be expected to challenge for the title. In fact, 82.6 percent of Rangers fans think that Gerrard will win it.

But, coming up against Rodgers’ Celtic side in his debut campaign may prove too much for the Anfield legend. As of the 5 August, Celtic are at odds of 1/12 with Betway to retain their title. And Rodgers has also strengthened a side which has been completely dominant ever since he took the reins at Celtic Park. It is doubtful that Rangers will be able to threaten the Bhoys this season, and bookies have placed Gerrard’s men at 15/2 to do the business. But, if Gerrard hits the ground running, his side could become dangerous in the future.

Rodgers is in a strong position to win the treble for a third consecutive season and solidify Celtic’s status as the kings of Scotland. Rangers may pose a threat in the years to come but, this season, it’s unlikely that Gerrard will be able to topple his old Liverpool boss.
