Celtic have been offered a huge reprieve in the title race after the SPFL clubs agreed via majority decision to postpone the two games against Hibernian and theRangers until after the New Year, leaving Hoops’ fans everywhere delighted with the news.
A report by The Guardian stated that the league were edging closer to a decision that would lead to the top flight being halted after the Boxing Day fixtures, meaning Celtic’s tie against St Johnstone will go ahead in front of just 500 fans at McDiarmid Park.
In typical fashion, it was announced that theRangers and Ross County were believed to be the only two clubs opposing an expedited winter break, but the majority decision of 10-2 means their voices will pale insignificant.
And the league announced as such just moments later. As a result, the fixtures against Hibernian and theRangers will be put back by two weeks and four weeks respectively, meaning there will now be a chance for a full capacity Celtic Park in the Glasgow derby as opposed to earlier fears.
The date for the new games will now be the weekends of January 17/18 and February 1/2, thus meaning the return of fans will be much more likely as it falls two weeks after the end of Nicola Sturgeon’s newly imposed three-week circuit breaker.
And theRangers fans have announced their anger on Twitter,
The decision comes untimely for tonight’s opponents St Mirren, who had a request to postpone the game against Celtic denied by the league, but that is the least of Celtic’s worries.
