Goalkeeper hopes to seal Celtic return despite Barkas signing

It’s generally accepted that most clubs will enter a season with three goalkeepers, but the only time the third choice player gets to play is in an emergency.

In a time where finances are stretched, it would make sense for some teams to save wages by running with two senior keepers and relying on the youth team if things go wrong.

Last season saw Celtic have Forster, Bain and Gordon in the squad, so it will be interesting to see what Neil Lennon decides to do this season.

He’s currently got Scott Bain and Vasilis Barkas under contract, but it sounds like David Marshall is still hopeful of securing a return to Parkhead.

A report from Football League World has indicated that he’s waiting to see how things pan out, but it might actually be a wise move from Celtic to bring him back.

He would need to return with the understanding that he won’t be first choice, but it would give Lenny a reliable player to turn to if the Greek stopper needs some time to settle and adapt to the Scottish game.

Scott Bain proved against PSG why he isn’t a good choice to start regularly for Celtic, and Marshall would bring experience and ability to the squad.

Entering the season with only Bain and Barkas could trigger a nightmare situation if Barkas needs time to work his way into the team, while the added competition should force them all to up their games too.

Nothing suggests that Marshall is close to sealing his return yet, but it does make a lot of sense when you consider it.
