Thirteen points behind, a run of form not seen in decades (and that is no joke), critics and even his own fans baying for his blood – Neil Lennon is hanging on to his job, his career, his reputation, like never before.
Now, let’s try and stay positive and look at how Celtic can actually rescue this league campaign! I am going to focus on January, and yes it is true that we could be even further behind by then, but I did say I was trying to stay positive here folks…
Between now and the game at Ibrox – there are games against Kilmarnock, Ross County, Hamilton and Dundee Utd – three of them at home. If we are to believe that The Ten is still possible, these games have to be won, no doubt whatsoever. In that time theRangers have Dundee Utd, Motherwell, St.Johnstone, Hibs and St. Mirren – the extra game is due to Celtic’s Scottish Cup Final against Hearts on 20 December.
We don’t know what is going to happen in these games, and this article may well be absolute nonsense by 2 January. Celtic may go to Ibrox even further behind, but they simply cannot afford to lose this game. I’d probably take a point right now. Given the form of both teams, a draw would constitute progress for Celtic – yes it pains me to say that but if did manage to win then it gets very interesting after that.
If, and it is a big IF, Celtic can get through these fixtures no worse off after drawing or better still closing the gap with a win then – there MAY be room for some optimism amongst our fans. TheRangers’ next 4 fixtures include 3 trips away at Pittodrie, Fir Park, and Easter Road. Celtic during the same period play Hibs at home, Livingston twice in a row (game in hand) and St. Mirren. It is not outside the realms of possibility that there will be points dropped by Gerrard’s men in these games, they are all difficult.
Is this the reason why Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond are sticking with their man? Or am I just deluded? If you go can imagine a universe where Celtic beat theRangers on 2 January, could there even be a closing of the gap down to 3 or 4 points? Add to that theRangers European campaign in February and there could well be a turning of the tide greater than ever before, yikes I think it might be time for me to have a wee lie down.
