THE NEW SEASON started today for the Celtic FC Women side and their first task was to play city rivals The Rangers at K Park in East Kilbride. Here’s how the team lined up…

And after the high profile Women’s World Cup in France earlier this summer, when Scotland were very unfortunate not to come through the group stages, there certainly seems to be a higher profile for the women’s game and this was illustrated today when the Green Brigade pitched up to support The Celtic team.

To the match itself, Celtic took an early lead when Kathleen McGove blasted her shot from close range into the Rangers net after a quarter of an hour. 1-0 to Celtic!

After being denied a penalty, Celtic make it 2-0 on 21 minutes, this time the goalscorer is Sarah Ewens who rounded the Rangers keeper before finishing. And 2-0 was the scoreline at the interval, which the Green Brigade would have thoroughly enjoyed.

Things got even better at the start of the second half when ‘Skelper’ Kelly Clark heaped home a Ewens corner after 49 minutes.

The Rangers pulled one back on 52 minutes through Brogan Hay, who sounds like she’s been named after two famous Celts! There were no further goals, although Celtic certainly went closest and the final score in this opening SWPL 1 game of the new season was Celtic 3 Rangers 1.

It certainly was a Beautiful Sunday for the Green Brigade then. Well done you Ghirls in Green!
