Hammering Hamilton away on grass, beating Boavista at Celtic Park

Champions Celtic made the short journey to Douglas Park to play Hamilton on grass on this day in 1988 and ran up a record score. Hamilton held out for half an hour before Frank McAvennie headed the opener and the floodgates. That was my one and only visit to Douglas Park incidentally and it was certainly a more enjoyable experience that going to their new ground to play on the plastic pitch.  Enjoy the goals below…

Most Celtic fans will remember playing Portuguese side Boavista in the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2003 but the game was won in the second leg in dramatic circumstances by the King of Kings to take Celtic into the UEFA Cup Final in Seville against Porto. The home match against Boavista was a nervy occasion – Neil Lennon was booed for playing the ball sideways as the play was slow, Celtic scored an early own goal and we even missed a penalty.

A more satisfactory scoreline at Paradise for a European match against Boavista happened 45 years ago tonight in a European Cup Winners Cup second leg tie. The first leg in Portugal had finished goalless and Celtic Supporters were confident of the team getting a win and progressing to the next round.

This game was the first time ever that Celtic wore numbers on the Hooped jerseys while the visitors seemed to have chess boards on their own strips, so both outfits were talking points that night but only for 30 seconds because seconds later Kenny Dalglish put Celtic ahead.

The game ended 3-1 with Dalglish and Dixie Deans starring. The team was Latchford, McGrain, Lynch, P McCluskey, MacDonald, Edvaldsson, G McCluskey, Dalglish, Deans, McNamara, Callaghan (Lennox 70) Subs: Hunter, Glavin, Wilson and Hood. Attendance was 37,000.
