Having qualified for the UEFA Cup final, the next notable game was beach ball Sunday. Celtic’s opponents were in the shape of Rangers at Ibrox, and the race for the title was very much on.
Outside Ibrox that day, two Celtic fans sat in deck chairs wearing Hawaiin shirts. Once in the ground, the great wit of the Celtic support was shown. Beach ball after balloon and lilo after rubber ring inadvertently made their way onto the playing surface. The match referee was left with no option but to delay kick off by some 20 minutes. Who could forget that vista of inflatables?
The patter refused to draw to a close, even after a clear playing surface was restored. The full Celtic end belted out tunes to remind Rangers that they were no longer in Europe, before the Hoops faithful expressed their wit in continental fashion as the full time whistle approached with Celtic in the lead: ‘Adios, Adios, Adios’, replaced traditional chants of ‘cheerio’. It was a great display of good natured patter.
