Head of Recruitment silence, nearly six months after Mark Lawwell resigned

This past week has one of total joy. Quality signings in the door, and of course that thumping win over theRangers in the Glasgow Derby.

One thing that might have been forgotten in all that euphoria is that Celtic still hasn’t put in place a new head of recruitment, although from Brendan’s frank and honest remarks ahead of the window closing this is something that will be occupying his time after he’s had a few well earned days away from Lennoxtown.

I’m not being a killjoy, far from it, but we’ve got to move in a position of strength and hiring a new head of recruitment is a step in the right direction. It’s all very well that Brendan on a needs must basis has stepped into that role this summer and has certainly impressed but his focus needs to be on the training ground, developing the squad and preparing the players for the exciting Champions League challenges that are upcoming.

It’s been nearly six months after all since Mark Lawwell stood down, and yet here we are with no replacement to fill that void, and there’s not even been any rumours or reports about Celtic making moves for any potential replacements.

Despite that Celtic still managed to do some great work in the transfer window and got some quality additions in the door, but I’m sure we can all agree that it could have been done much quicker. Waiting until the last week of the window is good for no one, and having the right staff on board would help us avoid all that unnecessary drama.

Celtic is currently in a great position of strength on the park and off. It’s time we made great strides towards building an even stronger foundation and put ourselves in line with the European elite, because that is the best way possible to give Celtic a chance of bridging the gap with the elite clubs in European football in the modern era and to allow Celtic to start punching above our weight.

On the European front we have been a dominant, under achieving force for too long. When opponents or new signings refer to Celtic as being an ‘historic club’ they are obviously meaning that in a complimentary way. However as time goes by it’s becoming a harsh reminder of our failing on the European front for too long now.

We are in a good place right now. Let’s make sure it gets even better, and hiring a competent head of recruitment will help us achieve our goals, domestically and maybe even back on the European stage.

  1. IMO, the millions we spent during the recent window will NOT be repeated anytime soon.
When BR walks away in one or two years so will the goodwill towards our board.

  2. Personally don’t see where we are going to benefit that much from a head of recruitment?
The decision making during this window was down to Rodgers?
And think it is better for ourselves to be having a manager making such footballing decisions imo?
We already would have a team in place regarding what players might and are available for ourselves?
But the ultimate decision should be with the manager, and if they could and will fit into his plans for the team?
A head of recruitment would possibly lessen the work load upon Rodgers regarding the identification process involved?
But we are at a position now eventually, where the squad building process is nearly completed in how an overall squad can be constructed for ourselves, within formation and playing style terms?
So all the while that remains intact, then we are only at a like for like in the changing of players, that will occur every summer?
In an ever changing footballing world, if teams can work out how to stop our style of play effectively, especially if we remained so predictable, then Rodgers would possibly have to look at changes to how he would set our team up.
Which in turn would possibly involve different types of players to suit any changes the manager intends to be making?
At present, that’s not the case whatsoever, but that could change depending possibly on how our CL campaign goes?
So actually prefer our manager to remain as the main decision maker in footballing terms, moreso than getting in a head of recruitment who could get drawn moreso in the business affairs of getting cheap and selling big?
Don’t believe that we need a return to such a policy whatsoever, so fail to see what a head of recruitment can offer to be of any benefit to ourselves?
At present, there possibly needs to be work ongoing to identify players as potential replacements in most positions, especially Hatate by the looks of things already?

    • Grown up clubs not only identify but sound out deals throughout the year. We seem to do it a handful of weeks out the year.

Who is signed for the first team should always be the final decision of the manager, but everything leading up to that, the work behind the scenes and the deal being struck, should be done by someone specialist in the role.

Whether that’s a head of recruitment or Director of Football, or Director of Footballing Operations. The processes need to be better.

People are saying we done well out this window. That’s the hope, we don’t know that yet. Bernardo and Idah are known entities, Idah a 2nd choice striker who gives us options. Bernardo a tidy midfielder who needs to add more to his creative side more consistently to be a shoe in starting 11 player every week, but has potential and age on his side.

Schmeichel looks terrific and has plenty of pedigree and experience.

But the rest are unknown. We can’t assume they will be a success based on price tags.

Whoever handled players leaving did a great job, but I doubt it makes sense for the same person to handle incomings all at the one time.

      But the rest are

  3. Expecting anything to do with Scottish football pass without drama is unrealistic especially a transfer window.

    Embrace the drama. 😊

  4. Brendan said this will be looked at after the transfer window and that has just shut. Let’s show some patience just for once. And, despite all our success on and off the field, the anti-Board sentiment from some fans still exists. It is needlessly divisive and now hopelessly outdated. Time for some fans to back our club fully and not just a section of it. Let’s leave all the silly anti-Board agendas to those who deserve it like those across the city. !

  5. Has Junior actually left, he was on gardening leave, but does anyone know if Junior has 100% gone from Celtic.
Does Daddy still have him on the payroll ???.
Can anyone confirm my concerns with actual proof.
