Matt O’Riley came on from the bench at the weekend and managed to grab himself a goal after a recent dip in fork for the young Dane. After joining from MK Dons last January transfer window for just £1.5 million, the former Fulham youth player has been exceptional in the famous green and white hoops.
Like every player, Matt just hit one of they patches where his phenomenal consistency came to an end and his performance levels just weren’t at the same place they were beforehand. It happens all the time throughout the game and it is part and parcel of being a professional footballer.
It’s easy to forget that Matt is still very young and is maturing and developing all the time. When we missed out on Riley McGree, nobody could have predicted the next taxi off the rank would be so good. Despite the quipping and trolling by Middlesbrough, I think they must know by now they did us a massive favour when it came to beating us to that particular signing.
We haven’t looked back. And neither has Matt. He is at home here and is loved by the Celtic supporters and that’s why this too shall pass. And it has by the looks of his cameo and glorious strike at Celtic Park on Saturday night. After trying with all his might for some time, the Denmark U21 cap was delighted one came off eventually and had this to say on the matter: “It’s been a long time coming, as reported by Scottish Sun. “I think I’ve had about 365 shots so it was good to see one go in! I’m just happy whenever I get on the pitch. I always try to contribute and I did today.”
O’Riley continued: “Our strength in depth was evident but it shows most weeks. Everyone wants to play at a really high level. As long as we’re all helping out there’s no need for frustration. The team is winning and we’re in a good place. I’ve got an edge coming on. Aaron Mooy has been in great form but all four No 8s are playing well. There’s a competitiveness in training and that makes us better.
The English-born Danish midfielder echoed his manager’s words about everyone in the squad being ready and willing to contribute to the team when required. He added: “When I arrived, I had the same thing with Tom Rogic. I was grateful every time I got the chance. Of course, I’d like to start every game but I understand the manager’s choice comes first. I just try to contribute whenever I get the chance.”
