It’s been widely reported that a deal betwen Celtic and AEK Athens has been agreed for the sale of Vasilis Barkas, as well as personal terms being sorted. The Greek goalkeeper arrived in Glasgow for his medical today and, according to Frank McAvennie at least, he is likely to start in Celtic’s curtain raiser against Hamilton on Sunday.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie said: “I think they (Celtic) have signed him, this boy from Greece. He has a great name, Vasilis Barkas, the Bhoys will make up a song for that one.”

“I am not comfortable with Bain, not for the season, certainly not. If this keeper can come in for £4.5million, it is not too much money. That is the ballpark figure that Celtic will be buying players for. Greece is the kind of place where you unearth a little gem. That is where you have got to go.”

“As I say that is the ballpark figure that Celtic will be buying players for. Lenny will get it sorted. If Barkas signs in time they would have no problem sticking him in the first team. It is not like there is a crowd there anyway.”
