“I took a lot of inspiration from the way he has thrived.” Why McGregor is Celtic Midfielder’s Role Model

Scott Robertson, like numerous other Celts out on loan this season, will be sitting in a hotel room this afternoon watching the Scottish Cup action on Premier Sports as Celtic take on theRangers in the 4th Round tie.

That list of Celts out on loan is remarkable really and hopefully these deals will provide some benefit for Celtic in the seasons ahead. One of the most likely to fall into that category is the 19 year-old midfielder, currently on loan at Doncaster Rovers and he’s definitely one who will definitely be watching today’s game.

“I watch all of the Celtic games and I’m the same as the rest of the boys in being bitterly disappointed at how things have gone. But nothing should be allowed to sour the success the club have enjoyed in recent seasons. That can’t just be forgotten about,” Robertson stated, as reported by Daily Record.

“And there is a chance to put a smile on the faces of the fans on Sunday. Our Scottish Cup record has been incredible and it’s really important for Celtic to finish the season strong and if we can reach the final it would achieve that goal. It would also provide momentum to take into next season.

“The last couple of performances from Celtic have been excellent so we are going into this game in good form. I don’t see why we can’t get the result and progress. You see clubs all over Europe losing a manager and results pick up so I’m backing a Celtic win on Sunday.”

Robertson also spoke about Neil Lennon leaving Celtic amid what has been a traumatic and disappointing league season for the Hoops. That tough doesn’t change the teenager’s admiration for his former gaffer and he also makes the point that his positive opinion of Lenny is widely shared by the Celtic squad.

“The respect for Neil is universal but he’ll always be the man who gave me the chance to play for Celtic in Europe. I’ll forever be thankful to him for that,” Robertson added.

“I was sad to see the way things ended for him at Celtic but he’s a legend. There will be a new man in charge when I go back and it’s important I’m in the best shape possible to impress him. Hopefully I’ll get a few games in pre-season and I’ll take it from there.

Robertson’s own Celtic dream is alive and well and he’s been encouraged by his mate Stephen Welsh breaking into the first team this season and earlier this week being rewarded by the club giving the defender a new, four-year contract.

“You look at how well Stephen Welsh has done, he’s been brilliant and is an example of what can happen,” Robertson said. Another role model  for the young midfielder is Callum McGregor who came back to Celtic after a loan spell at Notts County and basically has never looked back. With Scott Brown leaving in the summer, McGregor is odds on to become the next Celtic captain and he is also one of the top performers in Steve Clarke’s Scotland side as they prepare for the Euros this summer – Scotland’s first finals appearance since 1998.

“It’s been great to get games and be involved at a decent level. The big one for me was looking at Callum at Notts County early in his career and how that propelled him into things at Celtic when he returned.

“I took a lot of inspiration from the way he has thrived and one of my goals when I arrived here was to make the same sort of impact he had on this league,” Robertson added. “Hopefully I’ve done that and can go back to Celtic and hit the ground running.”
