If Man City meet Celtic’s asking price, we can’t deny Kyogo his golden chance

Selling Kyogo for over £20m makes perfect business sense, on the other hand he’s much more valuable to Celtic on the park…

Yesterday threw up a surprise regarding transfer speculation when Kyogo was linked with a move to EPL champions Man City, with The Celtic Star being first to report on the story earlier yesterday morning.

Details of the bid and how close it is remain unclear at the moment, but it’s believed to be have some substance to it, with some credible sources reporting on it.

Celtic are believed to value Kyogo at £20 million minimum, and rightly so. If Man City are prepared to offer such a figure then it’s going to a big decision for the club hierarchy.

On the face of it, accepting £20 million for a 29 year old with a recurring shoulder problem seems like a straightforward decision, but Kyogo is worth much more to the club by what he does for us on the park.

He’s been instrumental for the side since his arrival in 2021. His goals have won us trophies and he truly is a big game player. Think about his double that clinched the league cup over Hibs in 2021.

Or his brace that clinched the same trophy against theRangers just over a year later. All his Derby goals, his European goals. He’s such a vital player, and a wonderful asset to have in the Celtic team. And remember his record against theRangers in particular has been sensational, it’s hard to think of a player with a better return in the same number of games against either Rangers outfit.

Is it really worth selling him to make a quick buck? I know it’s also down to the player himself also, but the club should be doing all they can to keep him. No matter how tough that may prove.

However Kyogo being offered, literally the chance of a lifetime, to play for one of the top teams in European football, for arguably the best manager on the continent, in the highest profile league in the world. If Celtic deny him the opportunity then how does he react to that and pick himself up from the disappointment of being prevented from playing for one of the top teams in world football?

Maybe that will be the deciding factor, if Man City are prepared to pay the asking price? And if it is going to happen then the sooner the better as Brendan will need as much time as possible before the window shuts to bring in a replacement.

  1. Why don’t we just sell the entire first team, play the boys, and give up any pretence of being ambitious ourselves.
Smaug’s treasure hoard can get even bigger while making our neighbours competitive.
For the people who think we will replace Kyogo consider this: it took us ten weeks to sign Idah, a guy who we knew and wanted to come, what chance have we replacing our top two players in one week?
Our recruitment process is a shambles but nobody seems to be responsible or they would’ve been sacked long ago.
There is no explanation as to why our club requires so much money in the bank and it long ago became obscene. At this rate we could play a full season with no fans buying season tickets or merchandise and we would still be in profit.

  2. If Rodgers was prepared to let the club sell kyogo a few months ago, I wouldn’t have been one bit surprised?
To even consider such a decision at this point within the window, still seems totally bizarre imo?
It’s one thing to be saying that every player has a potential price on there head?
Completely different story merges when timing and circumstances are considered?
Don’t believe that we are anywhere close to be in a position to even consider selling kyogo at this stage?
More bizarre that it’s even considered a possibility, when the overall 25man squad has still some considerable work to be done within it at present?
Still some distance away from being finalised currently, and we are in a position of potentially allowing big players to be maybe being allowed to leave ourselves?
Fair enough, if Rodgers has some sort of plan in place, but little signs to actually say with confidence that there is?
Going into a Glasgow Derby after the window shuts, without kyogo or O’riley and potential replacements only in the door, without any time to adjust to the team?
Remains a very questionable position to potentially find ourselves in?
Now we could be looking at a situation where we are OK just about for our next 2 SPFL matches?
Yet we still haven’t allowed ourselves a great deal of time for the squad changes to be introduced into our team before the CL campaign starts?
At present this whole window seems to be getting dominated by time delays and some very questionable decision making that still seems to be ongoing?
Now it can still all come good for ourselves, with hopefully a longer term plans in operation throughout the overall squad in place?
Yet it’s still seems a very stange manner of how we may have gone about it, and even more so with the amount of work still required within the squad, and just over a week for it all to be achieved?
And we could find ourselves increasing the amount of work required, without any of the solutions actually within the club at present?

  3. Wonder who starts these whoppers?
Is it Lawwell – like the time he told the Scottish press that his son was the head of recruitment at City Group or that Celtic were going to spend mega amounts of money on summer recruitment?
Firstly, over the summer we were fed stories of countless players that Celtic were supposed to be interested in – none of which came to anything – and now the spread of these scare stories that the team are about to be decimated in the last few days of the transfer window.
Will Lawwell then tell the press and fans that he fought off bids from clubs and managed to retain Kyogo, Hatate and CCV, – in the hope that the fans will feel relieved and not be on his back about his failure to bring in the additional quality players that Brendan Rodgers quite publicly stated were needed to strengthen the team, in order to provide sufficient back-up in various positions and do better in European competition.

Machiavellian maybe but then again, would it surprise anyone other than the most gullible?
