It’s clearer than ever that a change of direction is needed at the club…

‘Sack the Board ‘rang out at Celtic Park yesterday, it was a flashback moment to the dark days of the early 1990s. Although the two situations are totally different, the message is the same. We need a change of direction in the boardroom.

Back in the ’90s the old board of the Kelly family were running the club into the ground, they quite literally almost killed us. This time around it’s the Lawwell family that appears to be the root of our current problems, according to thousands of supporters at the game yesterday who also chanted about Lawwell(s).

These days, thankfully aren’t in the same predicament, this board have us ticking over in a healthy financial position and we needn’t worry about the club’s future, but many supporters believe that they only care about the bank balance and not that of the club on the playing front.

Nothing more. Profit is all that they are interested in. They care not a jot about the ordinary every day supporter who plough their hard earned cash into the club. They are money orientated in their approach, and that goes against the ideology of our club’s beliefs. The way they have treated the Green Brigade is testament to just that.

Peter Lawwell of course is back as chairman and his son Mark is also head of recruitment so I don’t think it’s coincidental that we are seeing a return to the lack of quality investment in the squad. But it’s not just those two, far from it. The other board members are to blame also. Dermot Desmond, Brian Wilson, Sharon Brown, Thomas Allison, Michael Nicholson, and Christopher McKay also need to take the burden.

We need a major shake up at boardroom level, we’ve been static in that department for far too long.

Yes we have enjoyed domestic dominance, but we can do so much more. We want to be untouchable domestically while also improving on the European front. We had several chances to push on, but the lack of interest from the top has made us static. There is no ambition, apart from being slightly better than theRangers. The Celtic Board don’t want to implement a ticket exchange scheme at Celtic Park but this afternoon there will be a trophy exchange taking place as the first of our treble of trophies heads to a new resting place at Pittodrie or worse still Ibrox.

Celtic needs new faces with new ideas, a fresh approach and most importantly we need a connection between the boardroom and the supporters. If they think this is going to go away, they are sadly mistaken. The Celtic support have woken up to their meddling ways and many believe that Saturday’s chanting was just the start.

Just an Ordinary Bhoy

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. Excellent article. We obviously have a bloated squad. We also have a bloated board. What do these people actually do, to justify the obscene amount of money that they take out of the club on an annual basis?

    Hail Hail.

In my view, the only decision that this Board has got right in recent years has been to ban those Marxist anarchists they call the Green Brigade. That was a definite positive move that will benefit the clubs reputation around the globe. Every club in the world needs to weed these kinds of political agitators out of their fanbase, whether they be Communists, as is the case at Celtic, or Fascists, as with some of the European clubs. They’re a blight on the sport!

That having been said, there is no question in my mind that the Lawwell’s are at the heart of Celtic’s woes right now, and have been for years. Peter Lawwell has made sure his son got his hands on the recruitment department so that they can both keep a tight reign on spending. The problem is Lawwell junior hasn’t a clue what he’s doing, which is why Brendan (the yes man) has been unable to include 8 out of the 9 “projects” ML purchased for him. As long as the Lawwells are in such positions of authority within the club, we can all forget team progress. We see what the pair of them have managed to achieve in just 7 months since Ange left the club. They have completely regressed back to cheap buys with no quality. For his part, Rodgers has gone along 100%, working, as he put it, with what he is given. That statement was the clearest proof that he is not picking players for recruitment.

His boring football and awful tactics, which destroyed a vibrant Leicester City, are now fully on display in this decimated Celtic team. He has wiped out the dynamic and always-threatening system the team played under Ange, as well as the confidence of Kyogo, who looks lost now.

I’m afraid, though, that nothing is going to change as long as the fans continue to pay up. I can see this team losing the league this year; the players being so dispirited and confused under Rodgers. It would have to happen in the very year that the new Champions League setup offers greater revenue than ever before for the champions of the SPL. Exactly the same destructive process seems to be at work as that which allowed Neil Lennon to continue the rundown in the 10 IAR year. It’s almost as if they are deliberately obstructing Celtic’s success and progress. It doesn’t make any sense to anyone with an IQ even marginally higher than a houseplant.

  3. The big problem here is Mr Desmond,as he won’t admit he has made a big mistake bringing Rodgers back.in his first spell Rodgers had poor rangers managers and players to deal with. This time around their players are better and they have a decent manager plus Rodgers is on the way down ,he got found out at Leicester and the only club interested in him was Celtic, not one club from England ,in any division looked at him.The league has gone as Dermot won’t admit to his mistake and bring in a Modern thinking coach. The best we can hope for is they don’t give Rodgers any money to spend and waste, keep it for the new manager.
