Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that James McCarthy has suffered a significant injury. The Irish midfielder has been a bit-part player since signing but has been involved in matchday squads, offering a wealth of experience as well as a calming influence. However, the player will now miss the game against Motherwell tomorrow night.

Ahead of the trip to Fir Park, Ange told the media conference that McCarthy would be sidelined until after the break as he was quizzed on whether there would be any players missing for the penultimate game before the Qatar World Cup.

“James McCarthy, unfortunately, picked up a hamstring injury in training. He will miss out – it’s quite a significant one.

“Obviously with the break coming, he will be back training by the group.”

McCarthy did prove himself to be invaluable to the cause, winning the ball deep into injury time against St Johnstone and releasing Alexandro Bernabei for the full-back to set up Giorgos Giakoumakis, who scored the winner. The Irish Internationalist is a squad player, a role he likely agreed to when he joined, some are keen to continue to knock the player.

Hopefully McCarthy gets himself fit and firing to help his teammates onto a successful second half to the season and more silverware.
